Urotsukidōji III: Return of the Overfiend is a film that delves into themes of moral nihilism and the breakdown of social order through cosmic horror. However, it does so through extreme violence and traditional power dynamics, rather than challenging these dynamics. The narrative uses characters as archetypes within a framework of cosmic dread and biological chaos. It fails to engage with diverse identities, resulting in a narrow perspective.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include any LGBTQ+ characters or non-straight relationships. It focuses solely on heterosexual relationships and includes violent scenarios involving sexual assault.
Female characters are mostly portrayed as victims of violence or as catalysts for conflict. The story relies on the hyper-sexualization and subjugation of women, offering little opportunity for them to take control of their own lives.
The cast is made up of actors from similar ethnic backgrounds, reflecting the film's Japanese origin. While it avoids obvious racial stereotypes, the film does not intentionally explore diverse ethnic backgrounds or multiple layers of identity.
The story examines moral nihilism by showing traditional institutions like family and religion as ineffective. This serves the cosmic horror genre rather than providing a specific critique of societal norms.
There is no depiction of physical, neurodivergent, or mental health disabilities. Characters are defined solely by their roles in the supernatural conflict, without any indication of disabilities.
