The film evokes a childhood in rural Lithuania between the wars. A country boy, Tomaszek, lives on a rich estate, situated on the Polish border. He realizes that the Issa Valley he lives in is to be torn apart by internal political conflicts and unrests among the mixed population of Poles, Lithuanians, Jews and Russians. He, however, is captivated by a paradise surrounding him, the forest, and his fantasies.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ characters or non-heteronormative narratives. While its surrealist style might suggest subtextual themes, there is no verifiable evidence of queer representation.
Gender Representation
The story centers on a young boy, Tomaszek, which shifts focus away from traditional patriarchal structures. This emphasis on a child's internal world prioritizes emotional experience over rigid masculine roles.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The film excels by depicting a multi-ethnic landscape of Poles, Lithuanians, Jews, and Russians. It avoids a homogeneous portrayal, treating these diverse groups as central to the setting's identity.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The narrative prioritizes subjective reality over state-sanctioned morality. It frames the valley's paradise against political conflicts, critiquing systemic structures and nationalist ideals through individual lived experience.

AI Analysis
The Issa Valley is a sophisticated study of ethnic plurality and the fragility of social cohesion. It replaces singular nationalistic tropes with a multi-vocal tapestry of identities, highlighting how systemic pressures affect a diverse population. The film's strength lies in its refusal to present a unified cultural front. By focusing on a child's subjective experience, it effectively deconstructs the perceived stability of the interwar political order. However, the film lacks representation in several key areas. There is no evidence of LGBTQ+ narratives or characters with disabilities, and female character arcs remain undefined.
