Ousmane Sembène’s *Guelwaar* is a sophisticated post-colonial critique that uses spiritual tension to explore societal transformation. Its greatest strength lies in its commitment to authentic racial representation, providing ability to act to characters within their own cultural context without an outsider’s perspective. The film excels at deconstructing traditional hierarchies, treating religious authority as a subject of critique rather than an absolute truth. This intellectual depth allows the narrative to serve as a metaphor for the necessary breakdown of old social legacies. However, the film remains within conventional gender frameworks. While women are present, the power dynamics and leadership roles are primarily centered on men, which limits the subversion of traditional gendered hierarchies.

As Detective Gora begrudgingly investigates, he discovers that Guelwaar was a complicated man guilty of his own share of sins.
