Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

2.2/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film follows a conventional romantic trajectory centered on a heterosexual pairing. There are no depictions of same-sex intimacy or non-cisnormative gender identities.

Gender Representation

Fair

Beverly Calhoun provides a moderate subversion of gender hierarchies by impersonating a male royal. This agency disrupts expectations of female passivity, even if the story eventually resolves within a romantic framework.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Minimal

The production reinforces a Western-centric, aristocratic homogeneity typical of the 1920s. There is no evidence of non-white casting or the intentional blending of diverse racial identities.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The narrative celebrates traditional Western social structures and the sanctity of monarchy. It functions as a study of social maneuvering within established class hierarchies rather than a critique of them.

Disability Representation

Minimal

A skiing injury serves merely as a functional plot device to trigger the impersonation. The film lacks any meaningful exploration of physical impairment or neurodivergence.

Strengths

  • The female lead demonstrates significant agency by actively disrupting traditional gender hierarchies through her impersonation.
  • The protagonist's ability to navigate complex political and social structures provides a nuanced departure from passive female archetypes.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film lacks any meaningful representation of non-white characters or diverse racial identities.
  • Disability is used only as a shallow plot device rather than a way to explore character depth.
  • The narrative reinforces traditional Western aristocratic hierarchies rather than offering social critique.
  • There is a complete absence of LGBTQ+ representation or non-cisnormative identities.

AI Analysis

Beverly of Graustark is a quintessential product of its era, prioritizing escapist romantic comedy over social subversion. While the protagonist displays notable agency by navigating political structures through disguise, the film remains anchored in the period's standard social norms. The work lacks meaningful representation of racial, cultural, or LGBTQ+ identities, instead focusing on a homogeneous, aristocratic European setting. It reinforces the status quo of Western class hierarchies and heteronormative romance. Even when disability is present, it is used as a shallow narrative tool rather than a character-driven element. The film succeeds as a lighthearted comedy but offers little in the way of diverse perspectives.
