Jiří Trnka’s masterpiece is a profound exercise in cultural preservation, using stop-motion animation to celebrate the cyclical rhythms of Czech village life. It succeeds as a poetic study of folklore and national identity through its episodic vignettes. However, the film is a product of its era and setting, reinforcing historical social hierarchies and maintaining a homogeneous perspective, offering little room for the disruption of established norms. While visually and culturally specific, the narrative lacks the breadth found in modern works, focusing instead on the stability of communal and religious traditions.
