Synopsis

With Carbon in the news every day, you might think you know everything about her. But you’d be wrong. This spectacular and surprisingly unorthodox documentary reveals the paradoxical story of the element that builds all life, and yet may end it all. Narrated in first person by  Sarah Snook (Succession), Carbon tells of her birth in the violent core of an exploding star and of turbulent sagas through the fabric of our evolving Earth. Accompanied by celebrated scientists, unique animations and a stunning orchestral score, Carbon reminds us of our humble participation in the most extraordinary story in the universe.

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

5.3/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The documentary focuses on elemental biology and cosmic history rather than human social dynamics. While the personification of Carbon offers a non-binary perspective, there is no explicit evidence of queer narratives.

Gender Representation

Fair

By utilizing Sarah Snook’s female narration, the film centers a feminine presence within the traditionally male-dominated field of astrophysics. This shifts the cosmic perspective toward a more fluid, embodied experience.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The film emphasizes the universal participation of all life through biological egalitarianism. However, the specific racial and ethnic composition of the featured scientists is not detailed.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The narrative prioritizes a secular, scientific worldview over religious dogma. It deconstructs authoritative historical narratives by framing existence through the lens of physics and chemistry.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no evidence regarding the inclusion of neurodivergent individuals or characters with physical disabilities. The focus remains on elemental and cosmic processes.

Strengths

  • Uses a female voice to anchor a traditionally male-dominated scientific field.
  • Promotes a secular, naturalistic understanding of existence through physics.
  • Disrupts traditional hierarchies by personifying a fundamental element.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks explicit evidence of LGBTQ+ character arcs or queer-coded narratives.
  • The racial and ethnic diversity of the featured scientists remains unverified.
  • Does not address disability or neurodivergent representation.

AI Analysis

Carbon: The Unauthorised Biography succeeds in disrupting anthropocentric hierarchies by centering the agency of the elemental world. Its narrative architecture uses personification to move away from traditional, patriarchal scientific observation. However, the film lacks explicit engagement with identity-based social commentary. While it promotes a universalist framework, it does not provide clear evidence of diverse human representation in its scientific community. Ultimately, the documentary functions as a sophisticated piece of scientific storytelling that challenges human-centric perspectives through a naturalistic lens.
