Carol's Journey uses the perspective of a twelve-year-old girl to challenge the rigid social structures of 1938 Spain. By centering a Spanish-American outsider, the film explores the friction between external cultural influences and domestic traditionalism during the Civil War. The narrative succeeds in using a non-local protagonist to question the boundaries of a closed social system. It effectively challenges hierarchies of age, gender, and cultural conformity through the protagonist's disruptive presence. However, the film's focus on historical and familial tension leaves certain identity dimensions, such as LGBTQ+ representation and disability, unaddressed or unconfirmed.
