Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.6/10

Limited

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The film utilizes the Jekyll and Hyde duality to explore fractured identities. However, it lacks explicit depictions of same-sex intimacy or non-cisnormative gender identities.

Gender Representation

Fair

The story is driven by Gabriel Van Helsing, a traditional masculine protagonist. There is little evidence of female characters possessing high agency or subverting gender hierarchies.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

Set in historical London, the film follows standard Western gothic traditions. The narrative lacks evidence of race-bent casting or a diverse, non-Anglo-Saxon majority cast.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The plot focuses on scientific ethics and traditional moral binaries. It aligns with established Western horror tropes rather than critiquing systemic power or institutions.

Disability Representation

Limited

The Jekyll and Hyde transformation serves as a potential metaphor for mental health. However, it functions primarily as a horror driver rather than a nuanced exploration of neurodivergence.

Strengths

  • Explores psychological complexity through the classic Jekyll and Hyde duality.
  • Engages with themes of scientific ethics and subjective morality.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks explicit representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-cisnormative characters.
  • Relies on traditional masculine protagonists and conventional gender hierarchies.
  • Fails to provide diverse casting within its historical London setting.
  • Uses disability and mental health metaphors primarily as horror devices.

AI Analysis

Van Helsing: The London Assignment operates strictly within the established conventions of Western gothic horror. The narrative relies on the psychological complexity of the Jekyll and Hyde mythos to drive its tension, but it does so through a traditional lens. The film lacks explicit intersectional markers. While the themes of identity and metamorphosis are present, they are framed through archetypes like the 'mad scientist' rather than through progressive or diverse character studies. Ultimately, the production prioritizes genre-standard action and horror tropes over systemic critique or diverse representation, resulting in a story that feels rooted in conventional period-piece storytelling.
