Elias is a 10 year old boy living in Athens with his family in 1969 and has an interest in Jules Verne's stories and in astronomy. His father, with whom Elias has a strong relationship, is a travelling salesman and his absence affects the whole family. On the eve of his departure for a long business trip he promises his son that he'll be back in time to watch the moon landing on TV together, but he is killed in a car accident. While Elias' mother and his elder brother deal with the loss in their own way, Elias refuses to accept his father's death. He creates an imaginary world, in which his father is alive. He shares fictitious stories with his friends, he sends letters to his grandmother on behalf of his father and he dreams of places like he did with him. Elias' mother and his godfather, who do everything to bring him back to reality, take him to a summer house. On the night of the moon landing Elias meets his father in his own way and comes to terms with his loss.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film focuses strictly on the nuclear family and the protagonist's internal psychological state. There is no evidence of LGBTQ+ characters or narratives addressing non-cisnormative identities.
Gender Representation
The story disrupts patriarchal stability by centering on the vacuum left by the father's death. The mother and elder brother act as primary agents navigating the emotional fallout of the loss.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
Set in 1969 Athens, the film reflects the demographic homogeneity of that era and location. The narrative is rooted in a specific, localized cultural context without multi-ethnic representation.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The film explores subjective morality through a child's refusal to accept death. It subtly critiques how economic pursuits, like the father's traveling salesman role, impact the domestic sphere.
Disability Representation
The protagonist exhibits neurodivergent-coded behaviors by using an imaginary world to process trauma. This provides a nuanced look at psychological coping mechanisms and mental health during mourning.

AI Analysis
Hard Goodbyes: My Father is a period drama that prioritizes psychological realism over demographic breadth. It functions as an intimate study of grief rather than a vehicle for intersectional representation. The film's narrative architecture challenges conventional expectations of mourning by validating a child's subjective, non-linear experience of reality. It finds depth in the protagonist's cognitive escapism. While the film lacks diverse casting or overt identity politics, it succeeds in exploring the deconstruction of the traditional family unit through the lens of loss.
