The day after his funeral, the corpse of Varlam Aravidze, the mayor of a small Georgian town, turns up in his son's garden. Although it is secretly reburied, the corpse keeps returning until the police capture the local woman who is responsible. This woman says that Varlam should never be laid to rest since his Stalin-like reign of terror led to the disappearance of her family and friends.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ characters or narratives centered on non-cisnormative identities. While it explores identity under totalitarianism, there is no specific queer-coded subtext present.
Gender Representation
Female figures provide vital moral and spiritual authority, disrupting traditional patriarchal hierarchies. The character of 'Mother' serves as a resilient anchor against destructive masculine state structures.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The Georgian cast is contextually appropriate for the setting. The film uses a post-colonial lens to depict a small national identity resisting the homogenizing force of imperial power.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The narrative prioritizes subjective moral reckoning over state-mandated dogma. It portrays the struggle against corrupt totalitarian institutions and the deconstruction of historical revisionism.
Disability Representation
Psychological anguish and mental breakdown serve as allegories for the human condition under tyranny. These elements function as narrative devices rather than specific portrayals of neurodivergence or physical disability.

AI Analysis
Repentance is a surrealist masterpiece that uses non-linear storytelling to challenge official historical narratives. It excels at deconstructing power dynamics and exploring the persistence of memory against state-sanctioned violence. The film's strength lies in its post-colonial critique, framing the struggle of Georgia against Soviet hegemony as a metaphor for cultural preservation. It successfully elevates individual conscience over institutionalized oppression. However, the film lacks specific representation for LGBTQ+ identities and physical disabilities. These themes are treated through allegory rather than direct, character-driven portrayals of specific marginalized groups.
