La zandunga stands out as a significant piece of early Mexican cinema due to its commitment to ethnic authenticity and social realism. By centering a Tehuana woman, the film avoids the homogenized, Eurocentric standards common in 1930s global cinema. However, the film remains bound by the social conventions of the time. Gender dynamics rely on traditional patriarchal structures, and the romantic arc follows a strictly heterosexual path without exploring diverse identities. Ultimately, the film's value lies in its intersection of regional identity and class critique. It uses a personal romantic conflict to reflect broader systemic struggles between the proletariat and capitalist interests.
