Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

5.2/10

Fair

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The 18th-century setting and focus on military unification offer no evidence of non-cisnormative identities. The film appears to adhere strictly to the social structures of the era.

Gender Representation

Fair

The narrative centers on Petar I Petrović and masculine military leadership. While female figures may appear in domestic or maternal roles, they lack primary political agency.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

The film disrupts Western-centric historical gazes by focusing on Balkan resistance. It emphasizes Montenegrin ethnic agency against a massive, multi-ethnic Ottoman imperial force.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Excellent

The story frames the Montenegrin struggle as a fight for sovereignty against empire. It prioritizes the concept of 'inat' to critique external systemic oppression.

Disability Representation

Limited

There is no evidence of neurodivergent or physical disability representation. Physical trauma in this war drama likely serves as a plot device rather than nuanced character exploration.

Strengths

  • Strong emphasis on Balkan ethnic agency and resistance against imperial hegemony.
  • Effective disruption of Western-centric historical narratives through a non-Western lens.
  • Powerful exploration of collective identity and the concept of 'inat' or defiance.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lack of diverse gender roles, with political agency concentrated in male leaders.
  • Absence of LGBTQ+ representation or non-cisnormative identities.
  • Minimal exploration of disability, focusing instead on trauma as a plot device.

AI Analysis

Defying Everybody is a historical epic that finds its strength in its anti-imperialist perspective. By centering on the unification of Montenegro, the film provides a vital look at Balkan agency and resistance against Ottoman expansion. However, the film's historical framework limits its intersectional depth. The focus on 18th-century state-building and military maneuvers results in a narrative dominated by masculine leadership and traditional social structures. Ultimately, the film excels as a study of ethnic self-determination and defiance against hegemony, even as it lacks modern representation regarding gender and disability.
