The film excels by highlighting Mexican identity and subverting Western storytelling traditions through magical realism. It offers a sophisticated look at how domestic labor can be used as a tool for women to challenge oppressive social hierarchies. However, the narrative stays within the bounds of traditional romantic relationships, offering no visibility for LGBTQ+ identities. The lack of diverse representation limits the scope of its social critique. Overall, the work is a powerful exploration of cultural specificity and gendered rebellion, despite the absence of LGBTQ+ and disability representation.
