The narrative focuses on the conflict between personal identity and the external pressures of 19th-century Quebec. Although the film lacks modern demographic variety, it provides a sophisticated look at historical hierarchies. The film’s strength lies in its character-driven exploration of how religious and familial institutions attempt to regulate personal desires. Ultimately, the film is a study of institutional control rather than a showcase of broad social representation.
