Synopsis

Natsume has been busy, navigating between humans and Yokai when he coincidentally reunites with an old classmate, Yuki. It brings back painful memories of a certain Yokai. Meanwhile, Natsume also became acquainted with Yorie Tsumura, a woman in the memories of a Yokai whose name he had returned. Yorie knew much about Reiko, but now lived a peaceful life with her only son, Mukuo. Being with this family was comforting for Natsume, but apparently a mysterious Yokai has been lurking in their town. On the way back from investigating, a “Yokai seed” that had latched itself to Nyanko Sensei drops into the Fujiwaras’ garden and grows overnight into a fruit tree. When Nyanko Sensei eats a fruit that is somehow shaped like himself, he suddenly splits into three!

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

4.9/10

Fair

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The film emphasizes unconventional connections and fluid emotional landscapes. While it lacks explicit queer identifiers or romantic arcs, it avoids rigid heteronormative tropes.

Gender Representation

Fair

Female characters like Yorie Tsumura act as stabilizing, knowledgeable forces. The narrative avoids aggressive masculine leadership, focusing instead on emotional labor and interconnected agency.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The setting is deeply rooted in a specific Japanese folkloric context. The human cast is predominantly homogeneous, lacking significant racial or ethnic breadth.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The story explores spiritual pluralism where the sacred and secular are porous. It prioritizes personal truth and memory over rigid societal or religious structures.

Disability Representation

Fair

Natsume’s ability to see spirits serves as a metaphor for sensory exceptionalism or social isolation. However, there are no explicit arcs centered on disability agency.

Strengths

  • Subverts standard hero tropes in favor of complex, interconnected social fabrics.
  • Challenges gender hierarchies by centering female wisdom and emotional labor.
  • Uses spiritual metaphors to explore the psychological weight of being different.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks explicit representation of non-cisnormative identities or queer romantic arcs.
  • The human cast lacks racial and ethnic breadth beyond its Japanese setting.
  • Does not feature explicit character arcs centered on disability agency.

AI Analysis

The film excels at subverting traditional hero tropes, opting for a contemplative study of coexistence and empathy. It replaces high-octane conflict with a nuanced exploration of the bonds between humans and spirits. However, the narrative remains culturally specific and demographically narrow. The lack of explicit representation for LGBTQ+ identities and racial diversity limits its broader intersectional impact. Ultimately, the work succeeds in its emotional depth and the deconstruction of social boundaries, even if it does not pursue aggressive demographic diversification.
