New Showbiz Analysis

The film operates as a typical 1930s genre piece centered on a scientific pursuit. The narrative emphasizes the struggle for personal recognition against academic ridicule, aligning more with individualist themes than systemic critique. Representation is constrained by the era's clichés, particularly concerning gender and identity. The intellectual leadership is portrayed as predominantly male, and there is no indication of LGBTQ+ characters or diverse racial casting beyond the protagonists' names. Overall, the film lacks the intentional efforts needed for a progressive rating. It remains a traditional mystery/horror story about unconventional research rather than a platform for diverse storytelling.
