Synopsis

A well known theater and movie actor, dissatisfied with his conditions at home and at the theater suddenly stops the dress rehearsal of a play in which he has one of the main roles, and goes on the Danube to visit his friend, a boatman transporting bricks on his small barge from a brick plant in a poor settlement to Belgrade. This unexpected action confuses everyone in the actor’s environment. Everybody sets out to the Danube in order to find out the real reason for the actor’s odd behavior and to find out when he will return to normal life. The actor refuses to talk, stating that he only knows what he does not want! The young director, who had started working on filming a portrait of the actor prior, doesn’t know what to do. The opening night is postponed.

Gender Representation

Fair

The story centers on male-dominated environments like the theater and a barge. However, it subverts masculine archetypes by showing a prominent man rejecting professional status and stability.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

Set within a specific Yugoslav regional context, the film explores social strata. It provides representation for marginalized economic groups by focusing on the working-class boatman.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The film critiques social conformity and institutional authority. It prioritizes individual truth and subjective experience over the rigid expectations of the urban social order.

Disability Representation

Fair

There is no evidence of characters with visible or invisible disabilities. The protagonist's dissatisfaction is framed as an existential state rather than a clinical condition.

Strengths

  • Subverts traditional masculine archetypes by portraying a successful man rejecting professional achievement.
  • Provides representation for marginalized economic groups through the focus on the working-class boatman.
  • Offers a strong critique of social conformity and the rigidity of established institutions.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks explicit representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-heteronormative relationships.
  • Provides no visible or invisible representation of characters with disabilities.
  • The narrative focus remains heavily centered on male-dominated environments and social hierarchies.

AI Analysis

The film functions as a character study centered on the rejection of social utility. It challenges the structural integrity of societal norms by favoring individualistic, non-conformist agency over institutional stability. While the narrative explores class-based social strata and critiques the rigidity of established institutions, it remains largely focused on male-dominated spaces and traditional interpersonal dynamics. The lack of visible queer agency or disability representation limits the breadth of its social commentary.
