Nursing student Asuka has just moved into an apartment complex with her parents and younger brother. On the first night in her new room, she is awoken by a strange scratching sound coming from the apartment of her neighbor, a reclusive old man who has refused all attempts at communication. Concerned over his well being, Asuka enters his home only to find him dead from malnutrition. Worse, it looks as if he had been trying to claw his way into her room. Asuka learns that there have been a number of strange deaths in the complex over the years from Shinobu, the handyman cleaning up the old man’s apartment. Even the girls at school whisper rumors of it being haunted.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film lacks LGBTQ+ characters or narratives addressing non-cisnormative identities. The story focuses on a traditional nuclear family unit and immediate residential dynamics.
Gender Representation
Asuka, a nursing student, provides female agency by investigating her neighbor's death. However, she largely follows traditional horror archetypes as a vessel for vulnerability.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
As a Japanese production, the cast is ethnically homogeneous. The film operates within a culturally specific framework without prioritizing racial blending or diverse casting norms.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The narrative explores urban isolation and community breakdown. It leans toward traditional supernatural horror rather than deconstructing Western institutions or promoting specific social critiques.
Disability Representation
The reclusive neighbor's physical frailty and malnutrition touch on themes of neglect. However, he functions more as a plot device than a nuanced portrayal of disability.

AI Analysis
The Complex is a genre-driven J-Horror film that prioritizes atmospheric tension over social commentary. Its narrative structure relies on established cinematic conventions, focusing on suspense and supernatural tropes rather than intersectional identity politics. While the film provides a female lead with agency, it does not subvert traditional gender hierarchies. The characters largely serve the requirements of the horror genre, maintaining a standard, non-subversive approach to representation. Ultimately, the film functions within a culturally specific, homogeneous framework. It lacks significant engagement with LGBTQ+ identities, racial diversity, or nuanced depictions of disability, resulting in a score reflective of traditional genre storytelling.
