Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.4/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ characters or non-heteronormative narratives. The plot centers on a conventional nuclear family, suggesting no intentional queer-coded subversion.

Gender Representation

Fair

While Laura drives the emotional conflict, the resolution relies on a male-led religious hierarchy. The power dynamic reinforces traditional patriarchal structures through Father Olmedo.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The setting suggests a specific Catholic-centric environment without confirmed non-Anglo-Saxon majority casting. The narrative follows standard genre conventions regarding ethnic representation.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The story is deeply rooted in Western religious institutions and Vatican authority. It reinforces traditional spiritual hierarchies rather than exploring secular or relativistic perspectives.

Disability Representation

Limited

Laura's strange behavior risks using psychological distress as a mere horror trope. There is little evidence of nuanced representation beyond the metaphor of demonic possession.

Strengths

  • The film provides a clear, focused narrative centered on a female protagonist's emotional journey.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film could challenge patriarchal religious hierarchies by providing more diverse authority figures.
  • The narrative should avoid using psychological distress as a superficial plot device for horror.
  • There is a need for more intentional LGBTQ+ representation and non-heteronormative character arcs.
  • The story could benefit from a more diverse cast to move beyond standard genre conventions.

AI Analysis

13 Exorcisms operates as a traditional genre piece that adheres to established social and institutional hierarchies. The narrative relies heavily on the authority of the Church and conventional family structures, offering very little disruption to standard identity-based norms. The film's reliance on a patriarchal religious framework limits its scope for diverse storytelling. By centering the conflict on a male authority figure mediating a female protagonist's crisis, the film reinforces existing power dynamics rather than challenging them. Ultimately, the work functions within a narrow cultural lens. It prioritizes religious morality and traditional tropes over meaningful explorations of neurodivergence, queer identity, or racial variety.
