Beyond Evil functions as a typical supernatural thriller from the early 1980s. It adheres to the era's conventions by focusing on a heterosexual couple and using traditional horror archetypes. The film's approach to diversity is limited by its reliance on established clichés. While the Philippine setting provides geographic variety, the narrative often treats local mysticism as a source of terror rather than a complex cultural element. Ultimately, the film reinforces traditional hierarchies. It emphasizes gendered vulnerability and the 'othering' of non-Western spiritual practices to drive its suspense.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses on a traditional heterosexual relationship. There are no characters with non-cisgender identities or same-sex relationships.
