New Showbiz Analysis

Risti ja liekki is a traditional period drama that emphasizes historical accuracy and classical narrative structures. The film operates within the rigid hierarchies of 16th-century Finland, focusing on the tension between romantic ability to act and institutional control. While Mirjam's gender disguise offers a moment of tactical autonomy, it is used primarily to drive the plot toward a trial rather than to critique the assumption that everyone is straight or cisgender. The film remains a localized historical study of religious and social constraints.
