New Showbiz Analysis

I Saw a King stands out by centering an Ethiopian guerrilla fighter within the context of Italian Fascist occupation. This choice actively challenges the historical homogeneity often found in WWII-era cinema by providing ability to act to a non-Western protagonist. The film uses the lens of a child's psychological dissociation to critique colonial power structures. By blending historical reality with the Sandokan myth, the narrative deconstructs traditional heroic archetypes and examines the trauma of occupation. While the film excels in racial and cultural critique, it remains more traditional in its gender dynamics and lacks visible LGBTQ+ representation. The portrayal of psychological dissociation remains an ambiguous element of the character's psychological state.

Official Synopsis

1936, in the aftermath of the Ethiopian occupation by Fascist Italy, under the incredulous gaze of the inhabitants of the small town in the Italian province Abraham Imirrù, an ethiopian prince and guerrila fighter is being held prisoner in the local Podesta garden's aviary. But for little Emilio, local recently force enlisted and reality-dissociated Balilla, he is Sandokan, the literal Salgari's character ...and he will be his hero.
