The film operates as a period comedy that uses classical literature to explore the friction between individual impulse and institutional control. It leans into the deconstruction of religious hierarchies rather than modern identity politics. While the film lacks markers of diverse identities such as LGBTQ+ or racial diversity, it finds strength in its critique of social and clerical authority. The narrative focuses on the tension between personal desire and the strictures of medieval society.
