World War I, Italian north-eastern front after the 1917 bloody battles on the Altipiano. A group of soldiers face the difficulty of war in a story that unfolds in the space of one night. Events follow one after the other without any kind of pattern: the peaceful mountains suddenly become a place where men die. But every story told in this film is a true story.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film lacks explicit evidence of LGBTQ+ characters or non-heteronormative narratives. It focuses on the visceral realities of soldiers in a 1917 combat zone.
Gender Representation
The narrative centers on masculine perspectives and military hierarchies. There is an absence of female agency or subversion of traditional gender roles within the trenches.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The story reflects the localized, homogeneous demographic realities of the Italian military. No significant non-European diversity is present to disrupt the historical setting.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The film avoids heroic or patriotic tropes in favor of humanistic realism. It presents war as a series of disconnected, fatalistic events rather than a nationalistic narrative.
Disability Representation
The film likely depicts the physical and psychological trauma of combat. However, it is unclear if these portrayals grant characters agency or serve only as tragic plot devices.

AI Analysis
Ermanno Olmi’s work prioritizes historical realism and a meditative observation of the human condition. The film succeeds in avoiding the sensationalism and propaganda typical of mainstream war cinema, opting instead for a somber, naturalist approach to the horrors of the Altipiano battles. However, the film operates within the conventional demographic boundaries of its 1917 setting. The focus remains on a localized, masculine perspective, which limits the breadth of representation regarding gender, race, and queer identity. Ultimately, the film's value lies in its observational authenticity. It provides a nuanced look at individual human experiences without attempting to disrupt modern identity politics or social structures.
