The narrative is driven by the patriarchal ambition of Rasmus Thomsen, who wants his son to become a doctor. The film celebrates traditional community roles and the nuclear family. It adheres strictly to the conventions of its time, which are homogenous and focused on ethnic uniformity. The story does not challenge these norms.
