The film follows a traditional coming-of-age story, using the 'outsider' cliché. It explores the tension between inherent identity and the pressure to conform to dominant culture. While the monsters represent underrepresented groups, the narrative adheres to safe genre conventions. The storytelling focuses on assimilation rather than a deeper critique of systemic issues, making it a moderate example of misfit-driven animation.
