Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.8/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks LGBTQ+ characters or non-cisnormative identities. Romantic interests are framed through traditional adolescent attraction within a male-dominated peer group.

Gender Representation

Limited

The narrative is heavily skewed toward male protagonists, reflecting the 1940s setting. Female characters exist but often occupy the periphery of the central conflict.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The cast is largely homogeneous, reflecting rural, occupied France. However, the inclusion of a Jewish girl introduces critical ethnic tension and systemic stakes.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The story explores the breakdown of institutions during wartime. It critiques the failure of Western stability and the corruption of adult authority during the Vichy era.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There are no prominent depictions of visible or invisible disabilities that drive the plot or serve as central character traits.

Strengths

  • The inclusion of a Jewish character provides essential intersectional tension and elevates the stakes of the narrative.
  • The film effectively critiques the failure of traditional authority and institutional morality during the Vichy era.

Areas for Improvement

  • The narrative is heavily male-centric, leaving female characters with limited agency or central roles.
  • The cast lacks modern intersectional breadth, adhering strictly to the homogeneous demographics of the period.

AI Analysis

War of the Buttons is a period piece that prioritizes historical demographic accuracy over modern intersectional casting. The film's focus remains on the social structures of 1940s France, which naturally limits the breadth of its representation. While the cast lacks diversity, the narrative gains depth by introducing ethnic persecution as a central plot driver. The shift from playground games to the reality of Nazi occupation provides a necessary, albeit heavy, layer of social commentary. Ultimately, the film's value lies in its thematic exploration of how political collapse affects the vulnerable, rather than in its variety of character identities.
