A village in the South of France, 1960. A band of country boys aged 7 to 14, led by fearless young Lebrac, wages an uncompromising battle against their sworn rivals, the kids from the neighboring village. A war of honor and allegiance that's been kept alive for generations, in which humiliation is the most fearsome defeat and no tactic is too extreme, including attacking the enemy stark naked!

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film focuses on the interpersonal conflicts of rival childhood groups in a mid-century rural setting. There is no evidence of non-heteronormative identities or queer-coded character arcs.
Gender Representation
A mixed-gender cast participates in the conflict, though social hierarchies largely mirror traditional playground dynamics. The narrative does not explicitly seek to subvert established gender roles.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
Set in 1960s provincial France, the film depicts a largely homogeneous population. The casting reflects the historical demographic reality of the era without intentional racial blending.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The story disrupts conventional authority by centering on children who operate within their own autonomous justice systems. It presents a complex moral landscape where ritualized play and aggression blur.
Disability Representation
There are no prominent depictions of physical, sensory, or neurodivergent disabilities. Characters with disabilities are not utilized as central agents or plot drivers.

AI Analysis
War of the Buttons is a period-specific exploration of childhood autonomy that prioritizes the agency of youth groups over traditional social structures. While the film offers a nuanced look at how children govern themselves, it lacks significant intersectional representation. The narrative is deeply rooted in the demographic realities of 1960s rural France, resulting in a homogeneous cast. This historical accuracy comes at the expense of racial, LGBTQ+, and disability diversity, which are absent from the story. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its subversion of adult authority rather than its breadth of identity representation. It presents a world where the rules of children supersede the oversight of the adult world.
