Synopsis

Set in rural England in the 1950s Eva fantasises about her handsome, worldly cousin Joseph Lees, with whom she fell in love as a girl. However, stuck in a closed community she becomes the object of someone else's fantasy, Harry. When Harry learns that Eva is planning to leave the village in order to live with and look after the injured Lees, he devises a gruesome scheme in order to force her to stay and look after him.

Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

4.4/10

Fair

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The 1950s rural setting implies a landscape of suppressed identities and social friction. While the narrative focuses on Eva's romantic fixation, it lacks explicit confirmation of queer character arcs.

Gender Representation

Fair

The film centers female agency through Eva's desire to leave her village. It subverts traditional masculinity by portraying Harry as a source of instability and predatory coercion.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Minimal

The story reflects the demographic homogeneity of mid-century rural England. The focus on a closed, localized community suggests a lack of intersectional racial blending.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The plot critiques traditional social structures and the restrictive nature of closed communities. It prioritizes complex, subjective morality over an idealized view of social order.

Disability Representation

Fair

An injured character serves as a catalyst for the central conflict. There is a risk that this disability functions primarily as a plot device for manipulation.

Strengths

  • Subverts traditional masculine archetypes by presenting male characters as unstable and predatory.
  • Centers female agency and autonomy through Eva's desire to escape her community.
  • Critiques the restrictive nature of traditional social structures and closed communities.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks visible racial and ethnic diversity within its historical setting.
  • Provides limited explicit representation of LGBTQ+ identities or character arcs.
  • Risks using disability as a plot device rather than for meaningful character development.

AI Analysis

Dreaming of Joseph Lees functions as a period drama that disrupts conventional romantic stability. It earns credit for subverting traditional masculine competence and critiquing the restrictive social hierarchies of mid-century rural life. However, the film lacks significant racial and LGBTQ+ visibility. The narrative architecture relies heavily on a localized, homogeneous setting that limits intersectional depth. While the film explores agency and the darker side of human nature, it risks using disability as a mere tool for narrative tension rather than nuanced character development.
