Wang Quan'an's drama centers on the multifaceted life of a working-class woman. It avoids melodrama, instead delving into how personal ability to act thrives within restrictive socioeconomic conditions. The narrative uses a medical crisis to critique institutional failures and the human impact of rapid industrialization. By focusing on the protagonist's psychological response to her illness, the film maintains a grounded, respectful tone. While the film lacks LGBTQ+ representation and maintains a homogeneous cast, it excels in its nuanced portrayal of gender and class. It provides a sophisticated look at the tension between domestic duties and personal identity.
