The film uses Japanese folklore to explore the tension between personal desires and societal or religious constraints. By focusing on unconventional relationships—both human and supernatural—it moves beyond simple genre clichés to examine identity and ability to act. While the narrative offers a nuanced look at queer-coded conflicts and the subversion of religious morality, it remains somewhat anchored in traditional patriarchal structures. Female characters often relate closely to the male lead or the folklore he investigates. Ultimately, the work employs the 'monstrous' as a metaphor for social outsiders, offering a sophisticated critique of how institutions regulate unconventional connections.
Category Breakdown
The film delves into complex desires through Satomi's romantic interest in Shibata and a non-traditional affair with Professor Himeda, challenging typical assumptions about relationships.
Female characters play key roles in driving the emotional tension, especially through Satomi's significant involvement, though the narrative focuses mainly on the male protagonist's journey.
The film's setting and cast reflect a specific Japanese cultural context, and it explores 'otherness' through mythological creatures rather than through diverse racial backgrounds.
The story questions traditional morality by portraying religious authority as a suppressive force. It gives emotional depth to supernatural beings, challenging the binary of good versus evil.
There is no mention of characters with visible or invisible disabilities within the narrative.

Official Synopsis
Professor Himeda, who teaches folklore at the university, has launched a youkai circle. At the end of the Edo period, a demon woman who fell in love with a kappa and a zashikiwarashi tried to trick the villagers into breaking up their relationship, but the kappa, with the help of a high-ranking priest, sealed the demon in a mound. Himeda wanted to find the "mound". By chance, he hears that member Asano is from the birthplace of yokai legends and that her family runs a guest house, so Himeda heads to a research camp with other members Satomi (Riri Kuribayashi) and Shibata. However, Shibata is shocked when she learns that Satomi, who had been in love with her, is actually having an affair with Himeda. On the other hand, Asano, who has returned to his parents' house ahead of others, waits for the arrival of the party with Mr. and Mrs. Nagata, who run a guest house, and his daughter Aya (Ito Kurenai).
