Coco Before Chanel examines individual empowerment against a rigid historical backdrop. While the film maintains a traditionally homogeneous demographic in its casting and romantic structures, it excels in its thematic subversion of gender norms. The protagonist's journey from an orphanage to high society is framed through her rejection of physical and societal constraints. The tension arises between the film's homogeneous setting and its progressive narrative, which highlights female autonomy and critiques institutional authority. This results in a work that is historically accurate yet socially defiant.
