Clouzot’s thriller is a sophisticated study of power and deception that stands out for its subversion of mid-century gender norms. By centering the ability to act of the wife and mistress, the film dismantles the cliché of the passive female victim and challenges the stability of patriarchal leadership. However, the film remains a product of its time, exhibiting a lack of racial and LGBTQ+ diversity. The cast is strictly Eurocentric, and the narrative is confined to traditional heterosexual dynamics, which limits its broader social representation. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its moral complexity. It replaces traditional heroic archetypes with a cynical, psychological realism that questions the sanctity of marriage and social institutions.
