Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks LGBTQ+ characters or themes. Interpersonal dynamics focus on traditional social structures without exploring non-heteronormative identities or queer subtext.

Gender Representation

Fair

Simona provides a progressive departure from genre tropes by serving as the intellectual driver of the investigation. However, the narrative still places female characters in positions of high physical vulnerability.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The setting depicts a homogeneous Italian social environment. There is no evidence of racial blending or casting that moves beyond the era's standard Eurocentric practices.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The story engages with the medical establishment and the Catholic Church as functional elements. It depicts a coexistence of secular science and religious tradition rather than deconstructing them.

Disability Representation

Minimal

Characters with disabilities are not portrayed with agency. Physical trauma is primarily used as a plot device to advance the mystery rather than for meaningful representation.

Strengths

  • The film subverts genre tropes by positioning a female pathologist as the primary intellectual authority.
  • Simona uses scientific rigor and professional expertise to drive the investigation forward.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film lacks racial and ethnic diversity, focusing on a homogeneous Italian social environment.
  • The narrative relies on physical vulnerability for female characters, a common genre pitfall.
  • There is a lack of representation for LGBTQ+ identities or characters with disabilities.

AI Analysis

Autopsy is a conventional giallo-style thriller that finds its strength in its female lead. By centering the mystery on a pathologist using scientific rigor, the film subverts the typical damsel in distress archetype common to 1970s horror. However, the film remains limited by its era and genre. The casting is largely homogeneous, reflecting a localized Eurocentric setting, and the narrative lacks intersectional complexity or diverse character identities. Ultimately, while the intellectual agency of the protagonist offers moderate progressive value, the film adheres to traditional social structures and lacks systemic critique.
