Agostina is a maid turned prostitute during World War II. She sends all the money she makes to the local priest in her home village for safekeeping. After the war is over Agostina and her friend Australia plan to open a clothing store so they return to her home island to collect the money from the priest. But after arriving there Agostina learns in shock that the priest has been dead for more than a year and that his eccentric successor mistook the received money for donations and spent all of it on building a new orphanage for war orphans. To make matters even worse, other islanders think that Agostina is now a millionaire and beg her to help them financially.

LGBTQ+ Representation
The film operates within a traditional mid-century Italian framework. There is no discernible presence of non-cisnormative identities or narratives that critique heteronormativity.
Gender Representation
Agostina demonstrates agency through her pursuit of economic independence. However, female characters primarily navigate survival through bodily autonomy or domestic management within existing social hierarchies.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The setting reflects a highly homogeneous social landscape centered on the Italian peasantry. There is no evidence of intersectional racial diversity or color-blind casting.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The narrative offers a sophisticated critique of religious institutions. It disrupts the trope of infallible moral authority by depicting the church's mismanagement of individual funds.

AI Analysis
Luigi Zampa’s work is rooted in Italian Neorealism, focusing on the socioeconomic struggles of the working class. The film prioritizes class struggle and the breakdown of institutional reliability over modern identity-based representation. While the film lacks intersectional breadth, it effectively challenges the perceived stability of religious and social structures. The narrative centers on the 'subaltern' experience, highlighting the friction between individual survival and systemic chaos. Ultimately, the film serves as a critique of traditional authority and the instability of post-war reconstruction, even if it remains demographically narrow.
