Supa Modo excels in its commitment to authentic, localized storytelling. By centering a Kenyan village and an entirely indigenous cast, the film successfully reclaims narrative ability to act from Western-centric viewpoints. The portrayal of disability is particularly strong, avoiding common clichés by granting the protagonist emotional and creative autonomy despite her illness. However, the film lacks representation for LGBTQ+ identities, focusing strictly on traditional communal and familial structures. While the gender dynamics are empowering, the scope of identity exploration remains narrow. Overall, the film is a powerful example of cultural reclamation, using a specific, lived-in setting to provide characters of color with profound ability to act and depth.

Female characters play key roles in driving the narrative. Jo uses her imagination to maintain a significant presence, while her sister Mwix offers a nuanced, assertive portrayal of teenage femininity.
The film achieves remarkable authenticity by featuring an entirely Kenyan cast. By setting the story in a rural village, it avoids outsider perspectives and prioritizes indigenous ability to act.
The film serves as a post-colonial reclamation of the narrative lens. It emphasizes community-driven storytelling and local ability to act, subtly critiquing the traditional Western gaze through a localized perspective.
Terminal illness is handled with nuance rather than as mere tragedy. Jo’s condition is part of her identity, but her creative pursuits allow her to remain an active protagonist.
