The film focuses on creating a Gothic horror atmosphere using period-specific genre conventions. While it features a capable female lead, the narrative adheres to traditional structures of its time. Representation of ethnic diversity is limited by the use of 'Yellow Peril' stereotypes and archetypal characters. These elements support the mystery-thriller plot rather than providing nuanced cultural insights. Overall, the work does not aim to challenge existing social or cultural hierarchies. Instead, it leverages historical tensions within a classic science-fiction and horror framework.
