Sergei Yutkevich’s drama is a character study set in the historical context of the 1890s. It focuses on psychological depth and the complexities of human behavior rather than contemporary social deconstruction. The film successfully presents a socially conscious perspective, emphasizing Chekhov's struggles against critics and his humanitarian actions. This offers a nuanced view of individual morality versus societal pressures. However, the film lacks diverse representation, particularly in terms of LGBTQ+ identities and racial diversity, sticking closely to the demographic and social norms of its time.
