The film 'Aztecs' attempts to challenge historical ritualism while remaining tied to the colonialist perspectives of the 1960s. It succeeds in providing female characters with unexpected authority, yet fails to offer authentic ethnic representation for its setting. The production relies on Western-centric moral binaries, positioning the protagonists' ethics against 'primitive' customs. This creates a narrative where the outsiders' values serve as the ultimate benchmark for civilization. Ultimately, the film's attempt to subvert local authority through Barbara is undermined by its reliance on a white British cast and a traditional storytelling framework.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include any LGBTQ+ characters or non-traditional gender identities. The social structure remains focused on straight and cisgender relationships.
Barbara gains significant authority by being mistaken for the high priestess Yetaxa, but female characters are often confined to ritualistic roles while male figures hold primary leadership positions.
The film uses a predominantly white British cast to portray Aztec characters, which limits the narrative's ability to achieve meaningful ethnic diversity.
The narrative criticizes Aztec sacrificial rituals as systemic violence but reinforces a Western-centric viewpoint by using the Doctor's morality as the standard for judging foreign customs.
There is no evidence of visible or invisible disabilities playing a central role in the plot or as character traits.
