Shadow Puppets is a conventional genre piece that prioritizes suspense and creature-driven clichés over the exploration of identity politics. The narrative focuses on the survival of eight strangers in an abandoned asylum, leaving little room for disrupting social norms. The film relies on established horror archetypes, which limits its capacity for progressive representation. Instead of using its setting to critique historical medical institutions or social hierarchies, the story remains a straightforward race to escape a murderous threat. Ultimately, the film lacks the intentionality required to move beyond standard genre parameters. It functions as a traditional thriller where the external threat of the monster supersedes any meaningful engagement with diverse lived experiences.
Category Breakdown
The film centers on a survivalist horror scenario involving a group of captives. There are no depictions of non-straight or non-cisgender identities, nor does it critique the assumption that everyone is straight or cisgender.
The plot revolves around a murderous creature rather than challenging gendered power dynamics. Despite having a mix of genders, women do not have enough ability to act to disrupt traditional hierarchies.
The setting adheres to traditional Western horror clichés. There is no indication of a non-white or non-Anglo-Saxon majority cast or the use of race-bent casting.
The narrative operates as a standard thriller without critiquing Western social structures. It touches on scientific ethics but avoids anti-capitalist or anti-Western institutional critiques.
Characters are shown as victims of an experiment rather than individuals with ability to act regarding neurodivergence. The asylum setting serves as an atmospheric backdrop without a deeper exploration of disability.
