Woyzeck (1994) is a somber exploration of systemic oppression rather than a diverse character study. It excels in critiquing institutional cruelty, especially through its portrayal of how medical and military hierarchies exploit the working class. Despite a lack of diversity in terms of race and LGBTQ+ identities, the film finds depth in its portrayal of neurodivergence. The protagonist's mental decline is presented as a tragic consequence of societal degradation, rather than a mere plot device. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its sophisticated critique of authority, even though it remains rooted in a traditional, homogeneous European setting.
