Wes Craven’s classic centers its narrative on a female protagonist, Nancy Thompson, who defies the standard 'damsel' clichés of the era. Her intellectual approach to the antagonist provides a sophisticated subversion of traditional gender hierarchies. However, the film is deeply anchored in the demographic homogeneity of the 1980s. The lack of racial, ethnic, or LGBTQ+ diversity keeps the setting within a very narrow, monolithic view of middle-class American suburbia. While it lacks broad diversity, the film offers a nuanced critique of Western institutions. It examines how the moral failings of parents and the failure of legal systems can destabilize the safety of the next generation.
