Private Lives functions as a psychological drama that uses personal trauma to deconstruct national history. By centering on a female protagonist returning to Argentina, the film explores the lasting scars of state-sponsored oppression and dictatorship. The film excels in its cultural critique, moving away from traditional patriotic tropes to examine the human cost of systemic violence. It uses an inheritance dispute as a way to explore the struggle for truth and agency. However, the film lacks visible representation in terms of LGBTQ+ identities or explicit multi-ethnic diversity. The narrative's strength lies in its socio-political depth rather than a broad spectrum of identity-based characters.
