Herzklopfen is a conventional romantic drama that upholds established social hierarchies. The narrative relies on classic clichés, such as class tension and physical conflict, to drive its plot. The film follows the storytelling norms of 1980s European cinema, focusing on a localized, middle-class perspective that lacks depth in addressing multiple layers of diversity. Ultimately, the work serves as a period-specific character study, emphasizing traditional masculine and feminine archetypes without challenging existing power structures.

The film focuses solely on a heterosexual relationship and does not include any non-binary gender identities or critiques of heterosexuality.

Julia Stemberger's first film role also marked her breakthrough as a character actress. 16-year-old toolmaker apprentice David falls in love with Susanne, a politician's daughter of the same age. Their happiness doesn't last long: Susanne becomes pregnant, and David must compete in a boxing match against a seemingly superior opponent.
