Synopsis

Three old friends meet at a school reunion, and after trading the current details of their lives, the women come to realize how much they are dominated by their respective husbands’ needs and demands. Aching for a taste of freedom, the three decide to go off on a brief holiday spree together, away from jobs and families. 'Wives' is a delightful, ironic look at how a new generation of women was beginning to rebel against social conventions and gender expectations.

AI Analysis

Anja Breien’s film is a landmark of feminist cinema that deconstructs patriarchal structures. By centering on three women reclaiming their agency, the film successfully subverts the domestic expectations of the mid-20th century. While the work is highly progressive in its gender politics, it remains limited by the era's lack of intersectional breadth. The narrative is confined to a specific, homogeneous socio-cultural demographic. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its systemic critique of the 'wife' archetype. It replaces passive domesticity with active, self-directed solidarity.
