Submission is a character-driven critique of institutionalized power. It succeeds by focusing on gendered agency and deconstructing the perceived infallibility of state institutions. The film positions its female protagonist against a backdrop of systemic corruption and patriarchal influence. The narrative explores the friction between individual agency and entrenched hierarchies. By highlighting the struggle of a victim against a perpetrator protected by systemic connections, the film challenges conventional social structures. While the film offers a sophisticated engagement with systemic victimhood, it lacks specific information regarding racial, ethnic, or LGBTQ+ diversity. The focus remains strictly on the gendered struggle within the Portuguese legal system.
