New Showbiz Analysis

Underworld stands out by challenging traditional gender hierarchies within the action-thriller genre. By featuring a highly capable and autonomous female protagonist, the film defies typical patriarchal norms in high-concept fantasy. However, the film lacks meaningful the way different parts of someone's identity overlap. It focuses solely on a binary species conflict, offering minimal representation for LGBTQ+ identities or diverse racial backgrounds. Overall, while the film showcases strong female leadership, it falls short in terms of racial diversity and disability representation.

Category Breakdown

Does Underworld have LGBTQ+ representation?

Minimal

The story centers around a heterosexual romance between Selene and Michael. There is no prominent representation of non-binary genders or same-sex relationships.

How does Underworld portray gender?

Excellent

Selene challenges traditional gender roles by being the main character who drives the plot and protects others. She is more skilled in combat and strategy than her male counterparts.

How racially and ethnically diverse is Underworld?

Limited

The casting is primarily white, focusing on a homogeneous look. The mixing of species types serves as a genre cliché rather than exploring ethnic diversity.

How does Underworld represent religion and culture?

Fair

The film questions institutional righteousness by depicting the Vampire Elders as corrupt and manipulative. However, it does not critique real-world Western institutions.

Does Underworld include disability representation?

Minimal

Characters are defined by superhuman abilities tied to their species rather than physical or cognitive disabilities. No characters face the world through the lens of disability.
