Lee Chang-dong’s work excels at deconstructing social and spiritual structures through a lens of psychological realism. The film challenges the sanctity of traditional institutions by focusing on a woman's psychological fragmentation. It avoids Western-centric storytelling homogenization but lacks representation of LGBTQ+ identities and multi-ethnic casts. The exploration of mental health is deeply felt but remains focused on spiritual crises.
