The year is 1933, and society has certain expectations of how young women should behave. 17-year-old Maren is wild and unruly and is in turn sent to the women's institution at Sprogø to become more compliant. The stay at Sprogø has the opposite effect on Maren, and she ignites a spark in Sørine, who after six years at the institution has become accustomed to the norms of the time and the expectations of the institution. Slowly the two begin to form an unbreakable bond, which will affect the rest of their lives.

AI Analysis
Unruly is a period drama that uses a restrictive 1933 setting to explore the friction between individual autonomy and institutional control. By centering on a protagonist who refuses to be domesticated, the film provides a strong critique of historical gender norms and systemic efforts to enforce female compliance. The narrative's strength lies in its focus on non-normative interpersonal bonds. The relationship between Maren and Sørine serves as a catalyst for emotional agency, moving the story beyond simple historical reenactment into a study of queer connection. While the film excels in gender and LGBTQ+ themes, there is a lack of information regarding racial and disability representation. The focus remains primarily on class and institutional identity within a European framework.
