Faeries (1999) functions as a conventional family adventure typical of its era. The narrative relies heavily on established character archetypes, such as the contrasting reactions of the two siblings to their rural environment. While the fantasy elements provide a canvas for non-human characters and subjective morality, there is little evidence of intentional characters who reflect more than one aspect of diversity. The film follows standard storytelling patterns rather than challenging social hierarchies. Ultimately, the work lacks specific indicators of diverse identities, focusing instead on a straightforward magical discovery plot within a traditional family framework.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include explicit LGBTQ+ characters or narratives that question the assumption that everyone is straight or cisgender. The story centers around a traditional sibling relationship between Nellie and George.
Nellie and George follow classic sibling archetypes, with Nellie expressing dissatisfaction and George showing delight. The film adheres to traditional gender roles common in late-90s animation.
The presence of fey creatures and a hobgoblin offers potential for non-human metaphors. However, it is unclear if these creatures represent diverse cultural backgrounds or if they are used as homogeneous clichés.
The fantasy setting moves away from strict realism through its use of magical creatures. The core plot remains centered on traditional, family-centric storytelling structures.
There is no mention of characters with visible or invisible disabilities. The narrative does not appear to address neurodivergence or chronic illness.

Official Synopsis
While waiting for their new home to be renovated, Nellie and her younger brother George are sent to a farm in the countryside, much to George's delight and Nellie's disgust. However, the farmhouse and the surrounding area are teeming with fey creatures. The first the two children encounter is a somewhat crotchety and unfriendly hobgoblin named Broom, who is (more or less) secretly looking after the farm.
